How We Work
Everyone wants the same things from a family photography shoot: Moving, beautiful images of you or your children that will just get better and more precious as years go by. A photographer who understands you and your children’s needs (and limits). Lastly, the process itself – the shoot and editing processes – needs to be fun. OK, ’Fun’ might be asking a lot if you have more than one energetic toddler… but the shoot shouldn’t be a tense hour of pursuing your little ones, wiping faces and cleaning off mud stains. I’ve been a London family portrait photographer for long enough to know that sometimes the photography has to wait. And as a father, I know food and a clean nappy can be as integral to a happy atmosphere as all the planning in the world. At Michael Rolt Photography, I aim to provide all of the above and make the whole experience a pleasure rather than a chore. I have a background in professional photography for both magazines and musicians (including shooting The Who in rehearsal) and also experience doing corporate work for brands like Nike, Birdseye and Faberge. So, yes, I pay careful attention to my technique and equipment and like to maintain high standards in this regard but I’ve learnt that if you or your family are not feeling relaxed and willing to enter into the spirit of the shoot, lighting and lenses are irrelevant. I use only the best, fast, low light lenses to allow myself the flexibility to take a client to a more natural setting or location and still obtain some superb, professional looking shots that will satisfy the highest of standards. Having said that, a studio can be the perfect location for a family or solo shoot as I can set up a more complex array of lighting to make everybody look their very best. However, often an outdoor location is the natural choice for toddlers and young children and can sometimes provide a vibrant, atmospheric backdrop that a studio lacks.
Based in London, where I live with my wife and daughter, I have been lucky enough to shoot a diverse spectrum of people, places (and animals) and this experience goes into every portrait I shoot, no matter how personal. I love the technology of modern photography. This geekiness comes from years of working with cameras, lenses and digital imagery both still and moving. My background in high-end corporate work and fashion means that I am used to working with only the best gear and you can be sure that I’m not missing a trick to get you looking your best.
